Once again, eleven local mayors in Cuyahoga, Summit and Portage
counties are mobilizing their staffs and residents to take part
in The Mayors' Initiative 2002 Sports, Fun and Fitness Extravaganza.
The event will take place on Saturday, September 28, from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be held at The MetroPlex, 18909 South
Miles Road in Warrensville Heights.
The event will feature a day of fun and fitnessan array
of sports and health-related activities for all ages and fitness
levels. The day's events will include the Cleveland Crunch
Soccer Clinic, indoor basketball, hockey, simulated golf, video
game tournaments, hip hop and senior line dancing instruction,
board game competitions, walking, open fitness center, tug of
war, obstacle course and a special mayors' competition.
Many of the participating communities have already coordinated
teams to participate, however, there will be open times for the
general public to participate in most activities. In addition,
UHHS Bedford Medical Center will incorporate many of the health-related
screenings and activities normally offered at their annual family
health day.
This consortium, called the Mayors' Health, Wellness and
Safety Initiative, was created in 2000 out of a series of meetings
between the mayors and UHHS Bedford Medical Center to create
a health vision for the region. The hospital supports and often
facilitates the various health initiatives developed by the mayors
of Aurora, Bedford, Bedford Heights, Glenwillow, Macedonia, Maple
Heights, Oakwood Village, Solon, Twinsburg, Walton Hills and
Warrensville Heights.
Over the past 20 months, the mayor of each community has helped
to coordinate specific health wellness and safety programs by
providing the leadership and engaging community representatives
and service organizations.
