Bedford, OH - Mr. and Mrs. Bretschneider were modest individuals.
They led very humble lives - until their deaths. Helen Russell
and Leonard A. Bretschneider, who had no children, bequeathed
an extremely generous portion of their estate - $800,000 - to
UHHS Bedford Medical Center. The Bretschneiders were long-time
residents of the community, often utilizing services at UHHS
Bedford Medical Center. They were inspired by the quality of
care received from their physicians and the hospital.
The Bretschneider's precious gift will live on in a very effective
way. UHHS Bedford Medical Center will be opening a new obstetrics
and gynecological unit named The Bretschneider Women's Unit on
Sunday, June 25, 2000. The community open house will be preceded
by a private dedication and naming of the unit on June 22.
The Women's Unit has been under construction since January
2000. The new unit will be comfortably expanded and will include
two
triage beds, three labor and delivery/recovery rooms and ten
postpartum beds. Midwifery services, neonatology coverage from
Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital and education are core
services offered for new parents. The unit will also gain private
rooms that will further enhance personal nursing care and education
for mothers, fathers and families. Other amenities include - "Your
Best Start" (a program that prepares parents for their new
babies), a celebration dinner, sibling tours, the Baby Beeper
program, Mother and Infant Home Care services, Lactation Consultant
support, a transitional nursery for the newborn needing constant
nursing care and comprehensive childbirth and infant care education.
The new Women's Unit at UHHS Bedford Medical Center will continue
to offer gynecological services, which include laser and laparoscopic
surgery, comprehensive breast services, continence/bladder control
rehabilitation and menopause and osteoporosis education.
Members of the community are invited to join in the opening
festivities on June 25 from 12 to 3 p.m. There will be self-guided
tours,
give-aways, refreshments and information about women's services.
